A favorite area of many tourists is the historical center of Rome. It has lots of important attractions, such as Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia, and the Trevi Fountain. There’s a lot to do in this area and also lots of great places to eat!

Here is my Rome food guide of where to eat in the Historical Center:

5. Mercato Centrale

Mercato Centrale is actually in Termini, but there aren’t a lot of good restaurants near there so I decided not to give Termini it’s own section. However, Mercato Centrale is a pretty cool place!

You can find pretty much anything you’re looking for from pizza, pasta, gelato, or even food from some more upscale restaurants. There are even some international options like sushi. It’s a great option if you’re waiting for a train and have some time to kill. It’s a place where even the locals eat! BONUS – A couple of things you should know when going to a restaurant in Rome

What should I eat and drink in Rome?

Whenever you’re traveling, each country has different customs and unique things. Here are a few things you should know about Rome:

Paying with a card

You should be aware that by law in Italy, any establishment has to let you pay by card if your bill is more than 5 euros. You might hear about “connection problems” or that their card machine “isn’t working.” However, you should insist they try anyways. Usually, they just don’t want to pay the transaction fee to banks.

Using the bathroom

bathroom in rome

Sometimes it’s not obvious how to turn on the in the sink in some bathrooms. In case you can’t find a way to start the water, try looking down – chances are, there’s a water pedal near your foot!

Same for the actual toilet – in some old traditional restaurants the flush button might be a pedal!

Look out for Servizio

“Servizio” or “Coperta” is a service charge or “table cover” that is common for Italy, especially for the most touristy places in the country. It can be 1-3 euros (even 5 sometimes) per person or 10-15% of the bill. This is, unfortunately, unavoidable in most touristy restaurants, so look down for a small line somewhere at the bottom of the menu to avoid unpleasant surprises afterwards. The non-touristy restaurants also might have it, but usually a small amount.

Tipping in Italy

Big tips like in the U.S. are not expected in Italy, so there is no need to tip 20% or so for good service there. If you really liked the service, you can leave your change or some coins. Don’t worry, this isn’t considered rude since tipping isn’t part of the culture. Servers are also paid proper wages so they don’t live off of tips.

Conclusion

6 most crowded places in Rome and how to avoid the line pizza di spagna before

So this is my Rome restaurant guide! I’ve broken down the city by area and then given you the best restaurants, gelato shops, cafes, and bars or clubs in each area. These are all handpicked by me and are some of the best the city has to offer!

On your trip, you can feel free to use the recommendations that I’ve put together based on my years in Rome and my local friend’s suggestions, or you can do your own research on TripAdvisor or other sites.

The one thing I recommend NOT doing is going to the most touristy places. These places are typically very overpriced and you’ll most likely be disappointed by the food. These places usually don’t serve authentic Italian food anymore and instead use frozen food. Also, the service in overcrowded places is far from perfect.

My biggest piece of advice to you is to avoid the main streets and head down some smaller streets. Look for smaller restaurants that have lots of locals eating there. Those are usually some of the best spots.

If you’re heading to Rome soon, be sure to check out some of these places and let me know if you find any good ones! Enjoy your trip and be sure to eat all the amazing restaurants in Rome, Italy.

If you’ve been to any of these places or have any recommendations, let me know in the comments!
