I’ve been to Greece more times than I can count and came back fascinated every time. So, I can give you advice on the must-visit spots and help you plan an unforgettable holiday. 

Even though there are many places in Greece worth visiting, I narrowed down my selection to 8 destinations, with Santorini taking the top spot. This is one of the best Greek islands to enjoy gorgeous sandy beaches, traditional Greek food, and stunning sea views.

For each of the 8 areas I’m recommending, I manually checked almost all hotels out there for each destination and handpicked the very best. As you’ll see, they’re organized in price categories, so there’s something for every type of traveler.

1. Santorini – where to stay in Greece for the first time

Santorini is probably the most popular Aegean Island, recognizable for its whitewashed buildings with deep-blue roofs – the perfect backdrop for your photos. It’s romantic and magical and provides the quintessential Greek experience. In order to reach Santorini, you can take direct flights or one of the ferry routes from Athens.

Start your explorations with a visit to Fira, the capital and main town in Santorini. Move on to Oia and the Santorini caldera, i.e., the remnants of an old volcano. 

Santorini is the perfect spot for couples, as it boasts plenty of romantic restaurants where you can enjoy delicious food and wine while watching stunning sunsets set over the Aegean sea. 2. Mykonos – the ultimate place to stay in Greece for nightlife

Mykonos is part of the Cyclades Islands and can be reached with a 3-hour ferry ride from Athens and Santorini or a direct flight to Mykonos Airport. It’s no secret that Mykonos is the party capital of Greece; the nightlife scene is bustling with countless dance clubs and beach bars, so get ready to party all night, every night!

If you’re looking for a place to party, the top 2 Mykonos clubs you shouldn’t overlook are the Skandinavian Bar Mykonos, which hosts 4 different parties every night, and Super Paradise Beach Club, an amazing beach club and a great choice for a daytime party! 

However, you’ll also need something to do during the day! Start by heading to the beautiful Mykonos Town to see the iconic windmills (map). Then, pick one of the many nice beaches to enjoy some crystal clear water – I recommend checking out Agios Stefanos Beach (map). Mykonos provides an endless choice of party spots and restaurants, so you’ll have a new place to explore every night – it’s the ideal place for friends on a fun vacation. 3. Athens – the top spot for history buffs

Athens is the capital city of Greece and an amazing place to learn about Greek culture, enjoy the nightlife, and do some island hopping – you can visit some of the Saronic Gulf Islands like Hydra and Aegina. Athens is a top destination for a getaway to Greece and a must-visit, in my opinion– you’ll enjoy the lively atmosphere and many archeological sites. 

The impressive ancient ruins of the Acropolis of Athens and the Parthenon will greet you as soon as you arrive in Athens. Other historical sites you should visit are the Temple of Olympian Zeus (map) and the National Archaeological Museum, but there are plenty of other amazing things to do in Athens!

It’s so much fun to discover the streets of Athens on foot! You’ll come across everything from great vegan restaurants to gyro spots and, of course, many mouthwatering pastry shops! Food is definitely one of the best ways to get to know Greek culture, so I suggest you try moussaka, souvlaki, and tzatziki – the staples of Greek cuisine!

4. Crete – the best spot for a beach vacation

If you are dreaming of a serene atmosphere and turquoise-colored waters, you are at the right place! Crete is the largest Greek island and a port city with many cruise lines that make it accessible from other islands on the Aegean Sea and Athens. If boats aren’t your thing, don’t worry; you can also take a plane.

Crete has so many beaches – you can stay for a month and still not get a chance to explore all of them! However, my top 2 Crete beaches are Falassarna Beach (map), a stunning sandy beach, and Balos Beach (map), which can only be reached by boat or by hiking – but totally worth it! 

Besides beaches, Crete has an amazing Old Town, home to the Venetian Fortezza Castle (map). Other essential things to explore in Crete are Heraklion, the island’s capital, and Chania, a lovely port town with tons of restaurants. 

The island is quite big, so my best advice if you’re going to Crete is – plan a longer trip. Stay at least a week to get to know Cretan culture and visit some gorgeous beaches; I promise you won’t be bored!

5. Rhodes – where to stay in Greece for foodies

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands and has a big ferry port that enables access from islands such as Mykonos and Santorini. But again, you can also take a plane from Athens if you prefer. Once you arrive, you’ll feel like you went back in time and landed in a fairytale – the atmosphere is magical!

This island offers the best historical sightseeing opportunities, so those of you who want to get to know Greek history and admire well-preserved medieval architecture, all while enjoying the beautiful beaches should definitely add Rhodes to your travel itinerary!

In Rhodes Town, you will be impressed by the cobblestone streets surrounded by archaeological sites and castles. The Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit, especially The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes (map) and the Acropolis of Rhodes (map)! 

What many people may not know is that Rhodes has a very unique cuisine! Here, you’ll find all the traditional Greek dishes, but you’ll also get a chance to try some dishes specific to Rhodes, such as pitaroudia and tahinopita. If you’re looking for restaurant recommendations, my best one would be Niohori Restaurant (map) – the food is authentic and delicious!

And of course, you absolutely have to visit one of the beautiful beaches to enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear water. If you’re based in Rhodes Town, I highly recommend checking out Elli Beach (map).

6. Corfu – the best Greek island for outdoor activities

If you want to visit an Island that not only has stunning beaches but also has hiking trails and charming traditional villages surrounded by olive trees, you will love Corfu! Located off the West Coast of Greece, Corfu is the second-largest island among the Ionian islands and can be reached by plane or ferry from other Ionian islands. 

The first thing you should do here is to discover the amazing streets of Corfu Town with so many colorful historic buildings, churches, and nice cafes. The main highlight of this charming town is the Old Fortress of Corfu (map), an impressive 15th-century fortress. Feeling hot? Go down to Faliraki Beach (map) and take a dip in the crystal water! 

Of course, we can’t forget the outdoor lovers. You should definitely hike Mount Pantokrator as it offers incredibly scenic views, and make sure to pay a visit to the surrounding villages. Finally, I’d recommend taking a day trip to one of the other Ionian islands, such as charming little Paxos, Kefalonia, or Zakynthos. 

TIP: if you land in Thessaloniki and you’re going to Igoumenitsa to catch the ferry to Corfu, make a stop in Ioannina, a lovely city nestled in the Greek mountains. The nature here is breathtaking, so it’s definitely worth spending a little time here.

7. Thessaloniki – the top spot for budget travelers

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Greece on a budget, Thessaloniki is the ultimate destination. Situated in mainland Greece, this is the country’s second-largest city, known for its vibrant atmosphere, cool cafes, and historical monuments. Thessaloniki has an airport, and most people arrive here and start exploring the city as soon as they land. 

Thessaloniki’s main landmark is the White Tower, an old Ottoman fortress that houses an interactive exhibition and provides amazing views over the city and the Thessaloniki port. After your visit to the tower, stroll along the seafront promenade and look out for Aristotelous Square (map), the focal point of the city. 

Other things to check out are the Arch of Galerius (map), the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia (map), and the Atatürk Museum, but there’s plenty more to explore. I can guarantee that after your trip is over, you’ll want to come to this amazing city. 

And lastly, one of my favorite things about staying in Thessaloniki is the fact that you can visit many other destinations. It’s very easy to plan a day trip to destinations such as the Halkidiki peninsula with its gorgeous beaches, the famous Mount Olympus, the Pozar Thermal Baths, and many, many more.

8. Naxos – one of the best Greek island to stay for families

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades Islands and can be reached by plane from Athens or by ferry from other islands in the Aegean Sea, like Paros or Mykonos. Naxos has a very laid-back vibe that is perfect for families. On this island, you’ll find family-friendly beaches and fun attractions for all ages.

There are so many nice sandy beaches in Naxos with shallow waters where you can enjoy various water sports. I can tell that it will be difficult to pick one of many nice pristine beaches, but my personal favorites are Agios Prokopios Beach (map) and Mikri Vigla Beach (map). 

In the afternoon, go for a stroll in the old town, check out nice local shops, and have a delicious meal with a nice view. Leave some time in your busy schedule to discover the cultural museums and historical churches in the main town of Naxos.

Mainland Greece has plenty to offer, but the Greek Islands are what attract most travelers.

To give you a geographical idea on which islands are located together and maybe throw some ideas for lesser known ones, I decided to also group them geographically

Here are top 5 most popular islands in each group:

• The Saronic Gulf Islands – Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Agistri, and Salamis
• The Ionian Islands – Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxos

• The Northeast Aegean Islands – Thasos, Chios, Samothrace, Ikaria, and Lesbos

You may have noticed that I don’t mention Crete in any of these island groups. Well, that’s because Crete doesn’t belong to any of these groups – it’s such a big island that it’s always considered on its own! 

Finally, I wanted to talk about some Greek Islands to avoid, although nearly all of them are very safe and pleasant. Unless you are a real big party animal, I would avoid Kos since there’s a lot of partying, and people tend to get reckless. Also, Skyros is a bit remote and there’s not too much to do – so it is only good for those looking to go “off the grid”. 

And if you’re traveling on a budget, skip Santorini in the high season; you can always visit in October – you’ll get warm weather, and the island is just as breathtaking!
