[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
1. Plaka – top neighborhood for first timers
Plaka neighborhood is, basically, Athens’ Old Town and one of the prettiest areas in the entire city!
It’s a VERY charming and bright neighborhood with authentic markets, colorful buildings, narrow streets, and tons of local restaurants and bars where Athenians just sit and enjoy their morning (or evening… or night) coffee.
If you decide to stay in Plaka, you’ll be within walking distance to many important sights such as the Acropolis, Agora, which I think is a very charming ancient site, and the area is super close to the Byzantine and Christian Museum!
Luxury (US$250 and up)
- Ava Hotels Athens – The stylish hotel has 4-star service, and I promise you’ll feel very spoiled during your stay. It’s located only 5 minutes away from the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum – great for culture lovers!

2. Syntagma – best area in Athens for short trips
Syntagma Square, also known as the “Constitution Square,” is so iconic because many historical events happened here, even battles. The area is anything but short on great restaurants, pubs, tavernas, bars (especially on Valaoritou Street) – and, of course, shopping streets. The Greek Parliament building lies right in the middle of the square, so you just can’t miss it.
So if you want to be in central Athens, here are the best places to stay in Syntagma:
Luxury (US$250 and up)

3. Psyri – top place in Athens for nightlife
Except for being a very central area as well, Psyri is one of the best places to stay for nightlife and if you’re a party animal!
Psyri is well-known for its many clubs and bars, and there’s always something happening there at night (especially around Iroon Square), no chance of getting bored! Go there to visit Athens Central Market or to enjoy some ouzo (the traditional Greek alcohol), concerts, street art, or if you want to dance in the bar all night long.

5. Koukaki – top place in Athens for a local vibe
If you want to be super close to the Acropolis but still enjoy a local (and not very touristic) atmosphere, Koukaki is your place to be!
Koukaki district is located a bit South of the Acropolis, and it’s a much calmer area. It’s actually a residential area of the city where I recommend going for traditional Greek bars and tavernas, beautiful streets, good coffee, and more!
Koukaki Square is the heart of this neighborhood, and Georgaki Olympiou Street or Drakou street are the best places to be if you’re searching for traditional shops and food places. It is also very close to two main cultural spots – the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum.

Now, if you’re the type of traveler that’s looking for luxury hotels, upscale restaurants and designer shops, look no further than Kolonaki!
The district of Kolonaki is the ideal base for you if you want to be close to tons of shopping opportunities and amazing restaurants during your stay. This area is right North-East of the Acropolis, not very far from it.
I’m also recommending Kolonaki if you’re a culture aficionado as well. Here you will find the Benaki Museum, where you’ll find a lot of contemporary art and Greek art from many different areas.

Metaxourgeio is, if you ask me, a kind of an underrated area of Athens where you can find an amazing art scene!
Metaxourgeio it’s very central and also well-connected to the rest of the city via public transportation. It also has a very strong, artistic vibe, and it’s full of awesome food places, art galleries, and, of course, cafes.
Also, if you choose to stay here, you’ll be within walking distance of the National Archaeological Museum, which is basically the main sight of this neighborhood, while Avdi Square is the heart of the district.

8. Gazi – where to stay in Athens on a budget
If you’re a budget traveler that still wants to be close to all the main attractions in Athens, then pick Gazi and you’ll have no regrets!
Gazi is more on the budget side of things. It’s a great place to stay if you don’t want to spend a big part of your money on accommodation plus it’s also a fabulous spot for nightlife, and is only 20 minutes away from the main attractions in case you want the best of both worlds.

One of the best blogs I have come across. Very helpful insights to the different areas in Athens. Helped me sort out my accommodation and what is possible for my short stay. Very practical. Well done.
made my day, thank you! <3
Thanks for the informative list. I didn’t realise Greece was so cheap compared to other European cities.
Thank you. I found your website very helpful. I would like to book an apartment for my family (2 children) and I’m considering the area close to Varvakios central market. There is a lovely apartment at Krama art space on Sokratous. It looks lovely but some of the reviews are saying the area has a lot of drug addicts. Are you aware of this? Thanks, Sinead
Hi Sinead, I think you might find that the area around Sakratous and the central market can often be frequented by some less than ideal characters. I can’t predict who you will meet during your travels of course, but areas such as Kolonaki or Plaka might be more ideal for your family and help you have a relaxing holiday! Thanks for your comment, I hope this helps. Whichever area you choose, have a great time!! 🙂
Thanks Romina, this is a very useful article. I’m a solo traveller so knowing which areas are the best places to stay is very helpful, the map is a good idea.
You are welcome!
Why should Glyfada be avoided?
Why? I also wonder. The best nightlife. Expensive clubs and restaurants, beautiful people, clubs and bars, you name it.
Hi Nicholas! First of all, the area is residential and not so interesting for tourists, but mostly I think the author meant that it is not the safest area to walk at night.
Hi dear, Glyfada is one of the poshest and most expensive areas of Athens. Far from dangerous. You must be confused when you say to avoid during the night. I say it’s MUST at night. The best nightlife in Athens.
This is a great informative article and really has helped me choose a place to stay given I was very unsure beforehand! Thank you so much!
This is great, thank you!
