If you’re a traveler that’s looking for a hotel to be in the center of Copenhagen, Indre By (also known as Copenhagen Center or Copenhagen Old Town) is the place for you! Indre By literally means “inner city”, so you can’t get more central than this!

The pronunciation is a bit different than you’d expect, so if you want to learn how to say it, this recording will make it easier for you!

From here you can easily get to places like the Rosenborg Castle, Amalienborg Castle or Christiansborg Palace.

This is not only Copenhagen’s oldest neighborhood, with a true medieval vibe and the spot to visit the famous museum and churches. Vesterbro is the place for all the cool boys and girls! This is the artistic part of the city, the place where artists, designers, filmmakers and photographers live. It’s also the best area for nightlife!

Located really close to Tivoli Gardens and West of the Central Station, Vesterbro is the former red-light district and now a place full of hipster bars and restaurants, vintage shops, trendy hotels, art galleries, and food halls! This can only mean one thing: you’ll never get bored in this part of the city, I assure you!

This district never sleeps, so during the day, you can spend your time around Værnedamsvej (a charming shopping street) and enjoy the many world-class restaurants and galleries around. During the night, you can check out the endless clubs you’ll find there, such as Vega Live Music Venue!

I must warn you, though, be ready to not spend much time sleeping there, and be sure you enjoy the sound of electronic music! Are you up for it? If the answer is yes, here are the best accommodation options in Vesterbro:

3. Nyhavn – Best place to see the wooden ships

Nyhavn is one of the most iconic spots in Copenhagen and the place where you can get that perfect Instagram shot!

Nyhavn is also called the New Harbor, and it’s indeed a port surrounded by beautiful, colorful buildings and plenty of charming cafes, typical of Denmark.

Nyhavn is very close to Indre By, so you’ll still be close to the center of the action! In terms of accommodation, you’ll find something for all types of budgets.

Plus, if you choose to spend your vacation here, you’ll only be a short walk away from Christianshavn, Christiania, Refshaleøen, and Holmen – some of the most beautiful areas in Copenhagen!

FUN FACT: This area is also the home of the famous author Hans Christian Andersen, so you’ll find here the beautiful statue of the Little Mermaid!

Since this is the most touristy place in Copenhagen, you can expect the hotels and restaurants to be a bit overpriced, but it’s undoubtedly a trendy place where you can enjoy a good Danish beer next to the water!

Are you traveling on a tight budget? No worries, Nørrebro is the place for all pockets!

From fancy hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants to budget hostels and food courts, as well as independent shops and boutiques, you’ll find everything your heart desires in this neighborhood!

Need some inspiration for this area? Well, if you’re looking for places to eat, head over to Jægersborggade – a street that has all kinds of delicious food, including lots of plant-based dishes, even plant-based hot-dogs!

This is another district where you’ll have plenty of interesting places to visit, such as museums, art galleries and more! For example, Nørrebro Theater is located in this area, and it hosts some of the best musicals and plays in the city. Another cultural point here is Assistens Cemetery, the place where the author Hans Christian Andersen is buried.

• Sleep in Heaven – Here’s a perfect, affordable hostel that all guests will surely love! They have an onsite restaurant where you can serve a yummy breakfast, and there’s a happy hour that takes place each day in the bar or beer garden – how awesome is that?
• Beautiful Spacious Rooms – If you want to stay in style during your Denmark vacation, this place is for you! This apartment is modern and very cozy, and it has everything you might need for a mid-range stay in this beautiful neighborhood.

• Globalhagen Hostel – Are you looking for a super-budget place to stay in the Nørrebro neighborhood? Well, you just found it! This non-profit hostel has some very comfy and clean rooms, an onsite bar, and is managed by volunteers, making it a unique place to spend your vacations!
• Urban Camper Hostel – I’m ending my list of recommendations in this superb neighborhood with this cool hostel hosted in a beautiful building. The coolest thing about it? It has some tent-like rooms that you can choose from for a unique experience!

If you walk a bit to the North of Indre By, you’ll reach the cute neighborhood of Østerbro. It’s the perfect spot if you want to get away from the busy city center while still being very close to the middle of it all!

Østerbro is my recommendation for people traveling with their family and children, as this is a more laid-back area of the city while still being walking distance away from the main attractions.

If you choose to have your base here, you can rest assured that you’ll be surrounded by tons of great restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as green parks and independent shops.

In short, if you’re looking for an authentic Danish experience, I definitely recommend this area. That being said, here are my best, hand-picked accommodation options in Østerbro:

Luxury (US$170 and up)

• Stay Seaport – If you want to have the water right at your feet, this is the place for you, trust me! This superb apartment is truly special, and it has one of the most beautiful, Scandinavian designs out there. Make sure to book it for an unforgettable vacation!
• Adina Apartment Hotel Copenhagen – In case you want to be a short walk away from many restaurants and coffee places and enjoy a local atmosphere, this is the place for you! The breakfast is delicious, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are sparkling clean – nothing more to add!

Middle-priced (from US$120 to US$170)

• Comwell Copenhagen Portside Dolce by Wyndham – This stunning, affordable 4-star hotel is close to a subway station and it’s right in the heart of this beautiful quarter in the city! Probably the best part about it is the decor – full of trees in the lounge area, and very sophisticated in the room and bathroom.

If you travel on a budget, Østerbro may not be the neighborhood for you. While it has several properties available, it’s nearly impossible to find budget options here. That being said, you’ll find great options in and around the city center and in Christianshavn.

Christianshavn is a special part of the city – it’s a man-made island constructed in the 1600s, full of beautiful canals and colorful houses!

In case you’re looking for some romance while still being close to the city center, then I cannot recommend Christianshavn more. It’s one of the coolest neighborhoods out there!

While walking around this area, you’ll be pleased to see that you’re surrounded by some of the most interesting restaurants in the city, as well as boutique shops and cool cafes.

This island also hosts Freetown Christiania (also known as Christiania) – a unique area of the city!

In case you’re seeking the calm and comfort of a home during your Copenhagen trip, maybe staying in an apartment might be one of the best solutions for you! Booking an apartment instead of a hotel room is a great idea for people who are traveling on a budget (the advantage of cooking your own meals in the kitchen is simply great!) or for those who are visiting in a larger group.

If you feel like this is the right decision for you, here are the best apartments I could find in Copenhagen city center:

Luxury (US$150 and up)

• Zoku Copenhagen – Yep, it is possible to combine coziness with luxury, why not? This is a property that is divided into rooms and studios and one of the most tasteful properties I could find out there. Just look at the pictures, it’s simply stunning!
• City Square Hotel Apartments – If you love bright apartments, then this one’s for you! I surely recommend it for up to 6 guests and it’s also sparkling clean – which I think is a big plus and you won’t regret spending a night or more here!

Middle-priced (from US$100 to US$150)

• Valby Apartments – If you want to save some money while still staying right in the center of the city, then this apartment is for you! It’s simple, nicely decorated, clean, and it is conveniently located near the city center – what more can you wish for?
• Copenhagen Apartment near the Beach – Here’s another cozy, bright place, decorated in a true Scandinavian style and for an affordable price. In case you want to be right next to the beach and still within reasonable distance to the city center, this is the one!

Budget (up to US$100)

• Library room in the Copenhagen Vesterbro area – Staying in Copenhagen on a budget can be a successful task, especially if you pick the right Airbnb for you – such as this one! This is a private room in an apartment and I truly believe there’s no better way to save money on accommodation during your travels!

• Apartment near by the Beach – Here’s a great, private apartment nestled between the beach area and the city center. It’s bright, it’s clean, it’s modern – so it’s basically everything you’re looking for and more!

Bonus: Best hotels near Copenhagen International Airport

Copenhagen Kastrup International Airport (CPH) is the main airport of the city, and it’s located only 8 km away from the city center, which means around 15 minutes by car.

Even if the airport is so close to the city, in case you’re visiting for business purposes or if you have a very early/late flight, booking a night as close to the airport as possible might be a wise choice, as you’ll get to save some precious sleep!

If you want to do so, here are the best Copenhagen hotels near the airport that I could find:

• Clarion Hotel Copenhagen Airport – Here’s my recommendation for travelers that want to stay in luxury and still be close to the airport. This 4-star property is directly connected to Terminal 3, so you literally cannot get any closer than this!
• Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers – If you’re looking for a middle-priced option instead, I can definitely recommend this one! It offers a 4-star service for excellent prices, and they have free WiFi and an excellent onsite restaurant.
• Sleepcph – No worries, I have a superb recommendation for those traveling on a tight budget as well! This nice hostel offers everything you might need for a perfect sleep near the airport. And it’s only 4.5 km away!
