Map of best places to stay ViennaLet me start by saying that Vienna is a very organized city with a population of about 1.9 million. The city is divided into 23 districts (called “bezirke”), starting from the city center as the 1st district and going clockwise.

Ok, but how can you choose the ideal one for you? Let me quickly go through the most notable areas and their purpose:

  • Where to stay in Vienna for luxury: Innere Stadt
  • Where to stay in Vienna for budget travelers: Landstrasse
  • Where to stay in Vienna for nightlife: Wieden
  • Where to stay in Vienna for families: Leopoldstadt

So, here we go – let’s find out everything you need to know about the top 6 Vienna districts! I have carefully chosen the best hotels for every type of budget, including 5-star hotels, middle-priced accommodations, or hostels.

1. Innere Stadt / Downtown (1st district) – Where to stay in Vienna for the first timeOld Town Vienna

Are you traveling to Vienna for the first time? Then you should book a room in Innere Stadt; it’s definitely the best place to stay for you!

What is Vienna city center called? You can recognize it on the map and signs under the name of “Innere Stadt” which is the literal German word for inner-city, or 1st District. This is the main area around the historic central town where most of the important landmarks are.

Around the district of Innere Stadt you can find St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Albertina, Haus der Musik, Hofburg (the old Habsburg residence) and the Rathaus, among other famous local landmarks.

Because it’s the most popular area, hotels sell out very fast, and you’ll be better off booking your accommodation ahead of time. The more you wait, the less availability you’ll find, and higher the prices.

Ah, and by the way, you just have to taste the most famous Austrian dessert called “sacher torte” at Hotel Sacher Wien, even if you decide not to stay there!

FUN FACT: The entire Innere Stadt (1st District) is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

You can stay in Landstrasse to be close to the lovely Schloss Belvedere (also known as Belvedere Palace and Gardens), the Hundertwasserhaus, and the impressive Palais des Beaux Arts.

You can find many cute restaurants, thrift stores, and nice cafés here that will not be overcrowded.

So if you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist crowds, then Mariahilf is the place to be!
