Which area should you choose?

As I mentioned before, deciding on your Tokyo hotel requires a lot of research and attention. After all, Tokyo is HUGE; there are 47 neighborhoods in the entire city!

PRO TIP: First, because Tokyo is so big and full of exciting attractions, you must pick a place close to your main points of interest. Second, make sure to choose something close to a train station or metro, preferably near the JR Yamanote train line; this way, it will be easy to move around the city (which you’ll have to do a lot, trust me!).

And here’s a map of Tokyo with all the neighborhoods I’ll be talking about in this post:

tokyo areas

To make things easier for you, I picked the 8 best areas in the city for tourists. Now all you need to do is choose one that fits your personal preferences and itinerary! Below you’ll find my personalized recommendations for different types of travelers:

Now that everything is a bit more clear for you, let’s find out more details about the best neighborhoods in Tokyo:

1. Shinjuku – where to stay in Tokyo for the first time

which neighborhood to stay in tokyo

As I mentioned already, Shinjuku is THE best recommendation for people going to Tokyo for the first time. It’s the heart and soul of Tokyo!

It’s also the area where I stayed during my trip, and I believe it was the best choice I could make! I was close to countless restaurants, bars, and exciting attractions, and the area was so lively; I never wanted to return to my Tokyo accommodation because I didn’t want to miss out on anything!

Shinjuku is a cumulation of everything Tokyo offers – lively streets, skyscrapers, unique shops, neon lights, bookshops, department stores, authentic restaurants, parks, and everything else.

The Shinjuku area revolves around Shinjuku station, so if you choose to stay here, you’ll know that you’ll also be close to public transport – I only see advantages here! Ah, and by the way, did I mention that this area never sleeps? Yep, it’s true! You’ll always find a place to have some drinks or to grab a bite, regardless of how late it is. And that’s a great advantage, trust me!

As you might expect, Shinjuku has plenty of fantastic hotel options that you can choose from. Below you’ll find my best recommendations:

tokyo districts

As you might have guessed already, Tokyo Station is the main transportation hub of the city and one of the most convenient areas to stay, especially if you’re planning on doing some day trips or if you’re heading over to some other exciting cities in Japan!

You’ll have a great connection to the airports in the Tokyo Bay area, and other Japanese cities such as Yokohama, Osaka, or Kyoto via shinkansen, for example.

The area around Tokyo Station (Marunouchi Area) has a central location, so it’s an excellent choice as you’ll be close to the main attractions as well. Actually, Tokyo Station can be considered a kind of a mall, as it’s enormous and full of shopping malls and restaurants as well – in Japan, it’s prevalent for train stations to be shopping complexes and great eating spots, even if you’re not expecting it!

The area around the Tokyo Station is full of great Tokyo accommodation options. Check out the best ones I could find below:

5. Asakusa – where to stay in Tokyo on a budget

tokyo top attractions

If Ginza is a luxury heaven, Asakusa is THE place to be for all people traveling on a budget to Tokyo!

Asakusa has another unique thing about it as well. Compared to the other flashy, modern, neon-lit areas of Tokyo, Asakusa hosts a more calm, traditional atmosphere – it’s like it’s been frozen in time, but in a good way! So if you love temples, small and authentic streets, and traditional restaurants, I genuinely believe that Asakusa is your place!

It’s true, you won’t find huge malls or department stores in this area, as it’s an older part of the city, but you’ll be super close to them in case that’s what you want (you’ll be 10 minutes away by metro from Ginza, to be more precise).

Some essential attractions in the area include Sensoji Temple and the Tokyo Skytree, just to name a few. Plus, it’s the BEST place to buy Japanese souvenirs, as you’ll find plenty of traditional shops selling handmade objects such as chopsticks or ramen bowls.

Convinced? Here are the best options for Tokyo accommodation in this area:

7. Ueno & Akihabara – best area in Tokyo for anime lovers

downtown tokyo

Ueno and Akihabara are two areas that are not that big and are located an easy walking distance from each other, which is why I chose to talk about both of them in the same section.

If you’re into anime, manga, cosplay, games, and flashing lights, then Akihabara (also known as the “Electric Town”) is the perfect place!

On the other hand, Ueno is an excellent place to see the cherry blossoms in Tokyo, especially in Ueno Park. Ueno Station is also a great transportation hub that will take you anywhere you want in the city, such as Shinjuku.

Akihabara is a very vibrant area that never sleeps. It’s full of sound and music from all the arcades, so if you’re looking for a laid-back, calm atmosphere, you might be better off in another neighborhood, unfortunately – and I’m referring to Ueno!

If you feel like either of these two areas will make you fall in love with Tokyo, then check out the best hotels below:

  • Onyado Nono – This beautiful 4-star hotel has a modern design that I love! It’s an easy walking distance to Asakusa Public Hall, where you can do a little window shopping, Ueno Park, and plenty of museums. Some advantages of staying here include a 24-hour front desk, free Wi-Fi, and concierge service.
  • Artist Hotel – BnA Studio Akihabara – Now, here’s a recommendation for those looking for a truly unique place to stay! This one looks fantastic, trust me – just take a look at the pictures, and you’ll understand what I mean. It is also conveniently located near Ueno Train Station and Ueno Park so that you will be connected to the rest of the city!

Middle-priced (US$60 – US$120)

8. Odaiba & Tokyo Bay – where to stay in Tokyo with family

tokyo sightseeing

Odaiba island and the area around Tokyo Bay are my recommendations for people traveling with kids to Tokyo.

Why? Well, even though it’s a bit far away from central Tokyo (it ain’t no Shinjuku for sure!) and it’s very different from the rest of the city, it’s located super close to many children’s entertainment spots such as Tokyo Disney (Tokyo Disney Resort), Tokyo Joypolis, Legoland, Fuji TV Building and plenty of museums.

Odaiba is well-known because the Statue of Liberty replica is located here (yep, the Japanese made their Statue of Liberty, what about that?!), the Rainbow Bridge, and shopping malls such as Decks Tokyo Beach Mall and DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, for example. As a bonus, this area is well-connected to airport limousines that will easily take you to either one of the two major Tokyo airports (by the way, scroll down to find my airport hotel recommendations!).

By the way, staying in Odaiba doesn’t mean that the city center is unreachable. You can get to the center in 20 minutes via the metro, so it’s not that bad!

So if you’re traveling with your family and want to spend most of your time doing exciting activities with your little ones, this area is for you! In which case, I’m recommending one of the gorgeous hotels below:

best capsule hotels in tokyo

Luxury (US$120 and up)

  • Hilton Tokyo Bay – If you’re searching for the best family hotels in Tokyo, you’re in luck! This 5-star property awaits everything you might need to feel like a queen or king with your children! I’ll add this: this hotel has 5 on-site restaurants and indoor and outdoor pools!
  • Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba – You might be searching for a perfect place in this district that offers excellent service for the money – in which case I’m here to help! This place is a 5-star hotel that has some more affordable rooms that you can choose from. And the views from the rooms are incredible! Plus, it is close to famous landmarks such as Legoland Discovery Center Tokyo!

Middle-priced (US$70 – US$160)

  • Hyatt Place – But if you’d prefer a 4-star place, no worries, I have an option for you as well! This one awaits with a delicious buffet breakfast food, free Wi-Fi, private parking, an on-site restaurant, and more!
  • Hotel Jal City Tokyo – Enjoy luggage storage, free Wi-Fi, a restaurant that serves breakfast food each morning, and beautiful rooms perfect for resting after a day of exploring the city! It also has an incredible location that will make your stay easy because it is close to many train stations!

Budget (up to US$70)

  • APA Hotel & Resort Makuhari – If you’re on a budget instead, then let me help you choose something that will fit your pocket but also offer a super good service! This hotel looks incredible; it’s super modern and has laundry machines, souvenir shops, and more!
  • ibis Styles – And if you just can’t get enough of this district, here’s another super affordable option! Even if it’s in this distant area, the property is only 20 minutes away from Tokyo Station, which I think is great if you ask me!

BONUS 1: Best apartments in Tokyo, Japan

what neighborhood to stay in tokyo

In case you’re the type of person that prefers staying in a quiet, calm apartment during their travels, then we’re the same. Staying in an apartment is one of the wisest choices if you’re traveling in a larger group, with your family or if you want to save money by cooking your meals, for example.

Tokyo has a wide range of options on Airbnb for all types of budgets and preferences. Still, please remember that the apartments you’ll find there are more similar to hostels than traditional European flats. Regardless of that, they’re cozy, and they offer excellent service.

Below you’ll find the best apartments I could find in Shinjuku, the heart of Tokyo, aka in my most recommended area in the city:

Luxury (US$190 and up)

  • 1Fa New AP Tluxury /loft up to 1 Near Free WiFi – Yes, it’s possible to stay in an apartment and still enjoy some luxury and a premier service! This is a duplex complex, and the place is more like a hotel, but the location is simply perfect!
  • 100-Year-Old Wooden House – This house was built more than 100 years ago, so it has survived WW2! But do not worry, it has been recently renovated, and it is ready to welcome you! It is located just 1 minute away from Hiroo Subway Station and close to many restaurants and shops!
where to stay in tokyo on a budget

Middle-priced (US$100 – US$190)

  • Unit With Little Hidden Balcony – This is an incredible option if you want a cozy stay in Shinjuku! It is very close to the subway station and has a charming and relaxing patio with big windows to breathe fresh air!
  • Tokyo Tower Home – This is one of the best finds in Tokyo! It is close to Roppongi and within a 2-minute walk from the Toei Oedo Line, the famous Tokyo Tower, and Shiba Park.

Budget (up to US$80)

  • Mini Studio with loft – Have you seen a well-equipped apartment on a budget? Well, I got one here for you! This studio may be small, but because of the intelligent layout (studio with loft, which is the newest trend in Tokyo), you can have everything you need, from a comfy bed, a private bathroom, and a kitchen fit in one tiny room!
  • Cozy Modern Studio – Last but not least, here’s another excellent option for those traveling on a tight budget. This one is great for 2 guests and is fully renovated! All in all, it has everything you might need for a pleasant trip in this area!

BONUS 2: Best hotels near the Tokyo airports

visit tokyo

Because Tokyo is so big, it’s only natural that it doesn’t only have one airport. It has two international ones, and you might land or depart from either of the two. It’s pretty common for big cities to have two airports – a big one and a smaller one, and the smaller one is usually dedicated to domestic flights.

Nope, for Tokyo, it’s not like that! Both of these airports are big and they connect international flights, so I’ll be talking about each of them below.

1. Hotels near Narita Airport

where to stay in tokyo cheap

Narita International Airport (NRT) is located in Narita, and it’s a bit farther away from the city than Haneda; more specifically, it’s 60 km away. If you have a flight that arrives very late at night or departs super early in the morning, it makes a lot of sense to pick a hotel as close to the airport as possible. This way, you’ll save some precious time, and you’ll be less stressed out about your arrival/departure.

If you decide to do this, here are 3 fabulous hotels close to Narita Airport (one for each type of budget):

  • Luxury: Richmond Hotel – Here’s my luxury recommendation for people who want to be close to this airport. This property has an on-site restaurant serving Japanese and Western dishes and a buffet breakfast. One of the best things about staying here is that it offers a shuttle with no extra cost that you can use to and from the airport – how awesome is that?
  • Mid Range: Hotel Nikko Narita – If you’d prefer a middle-priced hotel, this one has many facilities including 4 dining options, a 24-hour convenience store, and a free shuttle to the airport!
  • Budget: Karin Doo Hotel – For all those traveling on a tight budget, search no more, as I have found this great solution! This place is only 6 km from the airport and offers excellent service for amazing prices!

Book your stay near Narita Airport

2. Hotels near Haneda Airport

best hotels in tokyo

Haneda International Airport (HND), also known as Tokyo International Airport, is the most convenient one, located only 30 km from the city center. Even if it’s not that far, it might still be a good idea to book a room in a hotel close to it so that you won’t be stressed about a very early/late flight. Alternatively, you can stay close to Tokyo Station to get an easy connection to the airport.

If you want a hotel as close to Haneda Airport as possible, here are my recommendations:

  • Luxury: Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu – If you want to stay close to the airport in luxury, make sure to book a room here and you just won’t regret it! This 4-star hotel has free Wi-Fi, an on-site restaurant, and even a massage service that you’ll love!
  • Mid Priced: Hotel JAL City – For those looking for middle-priced hotels, I have a perfect option as well! This hotel is perfect if you want to be close to the airport and also enjoy a great night’s sleep after exploring Tokyo.
  • Budget: Hotel Oriental Express – But if you’re on a budget, then you should take a look at this cute hostel! It simply has some unbeatable prices and some very nice rooms! Plus, it also has free Wi-Fi, of course!
